The problem
Why a communication audit
What we believe we communicate and what others actually receive can be surprisingly different.
Communication influences almost every aspect of organisational performance, from leadership and collaboration to meetings, decision-making and workplace relationships.
Yet most organisations have little structured insight into how their people communicate, where their strengths lie or which skills could benefit from further development. People are also not always aware of how their communication is experienced by others.
For organisations and their people
Organisations, HR and Learning & Development professionals, leadership teams and business owners wanting a clearer understanding of communication strengths, tendencies, patterns and development opportunities within their organisation.
- Organisations
- HR and L&D professionals
- Leadership teams
- Business owners
The Audit can support individual professional development, leadership development and wider organisational communication improvement.
A starting point for development
The Human Voice Audit is being developed as a structured self-evaluation system that helps individuals understand their own communication profile.
Built around The Seven Layers of Effective Communication, it explores perceived strengths, development areas, communication tendencies and patterns.
The Audit is designed to provide insight into how people see themselves as communicators, potentially including different communication styles and preferences.
Its purpose is not to label people as good or bad communicators, but to encourage greater self-awareness and provide a meaningful starting point for development.
Start with the Human Voice Score
The Human Voice Audit is coming in 2027. Its current version is the Human Voice Score: twelve questions on how you experience yourself as a communicator, in about three minutes. It's free.
From self-evaluation to insight
Initial Audit: self-evaluation
Participants complete a structured self-evaluation exploring different aspects of their communication.
The results provide an individual communication profile, highlighting perceived strengths, lesser strengths, tendencies and potential development opportunities.
Results and expert feedback
Participants receive their personal results.
A one-to-one feedback session with a qualified Human Voice trainer or communication expert is recommended to help interpret the findings, explore patterns and establish meaningful personal communication goals.
Organisational insights
Where appropriate, anonymised and aggregated results can provide organisations with insights into communication patterns, perceived strengths and potential development needs across teams.
These findings can help inform future training priorities.
Practical training and development
Following the Audit, organisations can choose to introduce targeted communication training. This is optional but recommended where the objective is to develop and strengthen practical skills.
Training provides the stage on which participants can experiment, practise and refine their communication in realistic situations. Through interactive exercises, practical challenges and constructive feedback, participants have opportunities to develop their skills and experience how their communication is received by others.
Audience or peer feedback can also be gathered during training, adding another perspective to the learning process.
Enhanced reassessment
Following training, participants can complete a reassessment to review changes in their self-perception and development. At this stage, additional evaluation can be introduced.
A qualified trainer can assess observable communication behaviours, while relevant audience feedback can provide insight into how participants' communication is experienced by others.
This creates a more comprehensive picture, combining self-evaluation with external observation and feedback. It can reveal differences between how individuals believe they communicate and how they are perceived, helping identify strengths, blind spots and specific skills to continue developing.
What the Audit gives you
Awareness of each person's communication profile
Insight into how communication is experienced by others
A more informed foundation for targeted development
Individuals gain greater awareness of their communication profile, strengths, tendencies and opportunities for development. With training and enhanced reassessment, they can gain additional insight into how their communication is experienced by others and establish clearer personal development goals.
Organisations gain a more informed foundation for targeted communication development, helping them invest in the skills that matter most to their people and teams.
